How to make a 4-Patch Quilt Block
This is one of the simplest pieced quilt blocks and is the foundation for blocks that operate using a 4x4 grid. It is made by sewing 4 squares the same size together to make a larger square.
Four patch blocks can be made using 2, 3 or 4 different fabrics, depending on the effect you are after, and they serve as a great starting place to learn how to align seams where they meet.
What you will need:
Sewing machine (unless you are planning to hand stitch)
Cutting Mat
Thread
Iron & Ironing Board
Machine Needle
Bobbins
Rotary Cutter
Quilting Ruler
Step 1:
Cut 2 - 6.5” x 6.5” squares from Fabric A (white)
Cut 2 - 6.5” x 6.5” squares from Fabric B (paisley)
Step 2:
Place one square from Fabric A right sides
together (RST) to one square of Fabric B.
Step 3:
Sew ¼” down one side
Step 4:
Open the unit and press seam flat towards the darker fabric
Repeat Steps 2-4 with the other two remaining squares
Step 5:
Place the two units RST. Make sure you ‘nestle’ the seams of your two already sewn units.
Note: ‘Nestling’ seams involves pressing the seams of adjoining blocks in opposite directions so they lock together when placed on top of each other.
Step 6:
Sew ¼” down one side
Step 7:
Press center seam open on wrong side of block
Step 8:
Trim to desired unfinished block size if needed using your rotary cutter and quilting ruler
