How to make a 9-Patch Quilt Block
This is another very simple pieced quilt block and is the foundation for blocks that operate using a 9x9 grid. It is made by sewing 9 squares the same size together to make a larger square.
Nine patch blocks can be made using 2 or more different fabrics, depending on the effect you are after, and they serve as a great starting place to learn how to align seams where they meet.
What you will need:
Sewing machine (unless you are planning to hand stitch)
Cutting Mat
Thread
Iron & Ironing Board
Machine Needle
Bobbins
Rotary Cutter
Quilting Ruler
Step 1:
Cut 5 - 4.5” x 4.5” squares from Fabric A (white)
Cut 4 - 4.5” x 4.5” squares from Fabric B (paisley)
Step 2:
Lay out the squares as shown.
This will be your ‘map’ for assembling the 9-patch.
Step 3:
Assemble the first row according to your map.
Sew the first Fabric A (white) block to the only Fabric B (paisley) block in that row using a ¼” seam. Press toward the darker fabric.
Sew the second Fabric A (white) square to the unit you just combined.
Press toward the darker fabric.
Repeat for all three rows.
Step 4:
ay out the three units you just assembled as shown
Step 5:
Place Unit B on top of Unit A right sides together (RST) and pin, nestling the seams
Note: ‘Nestling’ seams involves pressing the seams of adjoining blocks in opposite directions so they lock together when placed on top of each other.

Step 6:

Step 7:

Step 9:
Place Unit C on top of Unit A/B right sides together (RST) and pin, nestling the seams
Note: ‘Nestling’ seams involves pressing the seams of adjoining blocks in opposite directions so they lock together when placed on top of each other.
Step 10:
Sew ¼” down one side
Step 11:
Press seam open on the completed 9-Patch block you just made.
Voila!
Enjoy your new 9-Patch block!
Step 12:
Trim to 12.5x12.5” if needed using your rotary cutter and quilting ruler.
